1. Frankie is a professional salsa dancer and instructor, and owns a studio where she teaches, so when she’s not fighting rogues or keeping the members of her pack in line with brute force, she’s shaking it out of the dance floor with style.

2. Frankie was born and raised in Rochester, New York and aside from family trips to visit the “old country” in Italy, the only places she’s traveled outside of Rochester have been for salsa competitions.

3. On that note, she’s also Italian. You know, in case you couldn’t tell from her name.

4. Many people assume that Frankie’s name is a shortened version of Francesca, but it’s not. Francesca was her mother’s name. Frankie’s birth name is exactly what she’s called: Frankie. However, she uses the name Francesca to hide her identity from werewolf hunter and hero Jace McCannon, who would gladly serve up the packmaster’s head on a silver platter. Don’t even get her started on the fact that Jace assumed Frankie was a guy’s name...

5. Family was a huge part of Frankie’s life until her parents were murdered three years earlier, which as her parents’ only child, allowed her to ascend to packmaster to replace her father.

6. Frankie’s favorite color is red, but she looks best in blue, which is why most of her salsa costumes are that color.

7. She hates long walks on the beach, mainly because she can’t stand overbearing heat, though she doesn’t really like the Rochester cold either.

8. She spends an unreasonable amount of time in the nail salon getting her nails done, particularly near the time of her annual estrus cycle, but it’s purely out of obsessive necessity.Fingernails which won’t stop growing is one of the shitty parts of being a female werewolf. Thank God that only happens once a year.

9. Her fighting specialty is speed shifting. While it takes some shifters nearly a minute to shift into wolf form, in a pinch Frankie can do shift in one second flat—literally—which is a powerful tool in a fight. She’s very in touch with her inner wolf.

10. In wolf form, Frankie’s fur is midnight black, the same color that her hair is when she is human form. Though her eyes are normally a deep chocolate brown, when she’s in wolf form they’re a bright golden hue

Because I am alone in an office all day, with no one to talk to but my imaginary characters, most people think my profession is lonely one, but I’m here to tell you it’s not.  When I’m not ‘chatting’ with the characters in my head, I can be found on facebook interacting with readers, fellow writers, reviewers and friends.  Or I can be found emailing other writers to talk about anything and everything, from story idea, covers, blurbs, the industry, hot guys <G> etc.  And when I’m lucky, I get to open an email from my editor to find an invitation to be a part of an anthology with other writers.

This is what happened with FLING.  I’d never met the wonderful and talented Sara Fawkes or Lauren Hawkeye before and suddenly we were thrown together to come up with a story centering on a FLING.  What fun we had brainstorming, and working closely together to ensure our stories flowed from one to another and our characters overlapped.  

Out of the process came a book that we adore and friendships that will last a lifetime.  Oddly enough the three of us were at the RT convention this last May.  I turned around in my seat and read the name tag of the gal sitting there and sure enough it was Lauren.  She then quickly introduced me to Sara.  It was so great meeting these girls in person and I already felt like it knew them for a lifetime.  

I hope I have the opportunity to write more stories with these two gals, but in the meantime let me tell you a little about our release!

Asking an author to pick a favorite character is comparable to asking a mother to pick a favorite child. Maybe it depends on which child is being good that day. ;-)

I love them all for different reasons, but I do find myself going through “love” phases where one of them gets stuck in my head. Maybe I’m working on their storyline, or perhaps they don’t think they were given enough page time and decide to throw a mental tantrum in my head. (Trust me, nobody wants Simon in their head when he’s in one of his moods)

But I always seem to come back to one character: Justus De Gradi. He’s a Mage who was born several hundreds of years ago. To physically describe him, he has a well-conditioned body, thanks to a strict workout regimen, he’s serious, works for an investigative organization called HALO, and is a Charmer who cannot keep the ladies away.

Maybe the simple reason I have such a connection to him is that he’s the only character that transitioned over from my first book into The Mageri Series. Something about him fascinated me, and I felt like he centered the story. Justus has been the most difficult to understand with the most walls built up. He’s critical, arrogant, spoiled by women, and believes that expensive things project success. Yet, he is also a man of honor, one who follows a moral code and does the right thing. There is a duality to him that I find him fascinating, and it’s been a wonderful experience to be able to uncover some truths about his past that reveal why he is the man we know today.

I don’t map every detail about my characters ahead of time. I enjoy the journey, and believe it or not, they do talk. They step off the page and gain a voice of their own.

Justus is devoted to his job, but underneath the surface, you sense that he craves building relationships with people even though he doesn’t like physical contact. But it’s a certain type of physical contact he doesn’t enjoy, one of an affectionate and intimate nature. He never touches a woman during intercourse, and will pull away if you do something as simple as touching his cheek. I looooove that about him. A man who cannot touch a woman intimately, a man who cages his emotions, a man who allows a woman to use his body but not his heart, a man who has the capability to love, but the inability to risk the consequences.

I think a lot of readers had difficulty warming up to him in “Sterling” because we’re only seeing that first introduction of who he is, but not getting to the meat of the story. By Impulse, I think he won a few people over. We are all more than what we allow others to see. We all have our own story, and I’ve enjoyed being able to weave his into the series.

Yeah, I’d say that Justus has always been a favorite. In a strange way, I feel like I’ve known him longer than the others because I first wrote him in another book that I never finished and gave up on. He pretty much snapped his finger at me and told me to do it again.

When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm listening to obscure music, watching movies, reading, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the internet. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which).

Some people count sheep when they have insomnia. Since I was little, I used to make up stories in my head in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I'd get so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down more and more, creating short stories which evolved into poetry.

Lots and lots of poetry. It's almost embarrassing that I have an entire box loaded with spiral notebooks filled with furious, heartfelt, and blushing words. Apparently, I had a lot to say.

Another one of my hobbies is digital art. I designed all my book covers. 

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to: giving my characters a pulse through publishing. I write adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels. I let the story tell itself, and color outside the lines. I am not a YA author, but I think it’s pretty great that there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal. These are the future readers!

The work that goes behind self publishing is hard work, I won't lie. On top of my regular day job: I write, edit, format, create cover art, and market.

But it's what I love to do, and someday, I'm going to be doing this full time.

Guest Post on The Healing Power of Love

I loved writing about Kyr’s incandescent relationship with Jolanya, and was surprised and even a little awed by the beauty and power of the scenes with them that came forth as I wrote. I have had experiences of sacred sexuality with my husband, and have felt the deep love that allows healing to occur. But these scenes with Kyr and Jolanya go beyond what I know personally. They seem to have emerged from some hidden well of knowing in me – or from the two of them.

As I wrote, Jolanya emerged as the Kailithana, a Priestess-Healer dedicated to healing men of their wounds that led them to commit evils such as rape. The role of Kailithana has roots in what Western culture calls the “sacred prostitute” – a term I seriously object to. In some ancient cultures, women served as the Goddess in sacred sexual rituals of the Union of God and Goddess, or in archetypal terms, the Sacred Masculine and Divine Feminine. They were Priestesses, not prostitutes. With soul-deep love, Jolanya uses her skills and magic to heal Kyr of his deepest wounds.

A little bit about my book, Dark Innocence, Book 1 in the Star-Seer’s Prophecy trilogy: Having been born and raised as a slave of an evil sorcerer called the Soul-Drinker, Kyr knows nothing but torture, rape and murder. He cannot endure any human touch, nor does he know what love or love-making are, even after he’s been through much healing and reached forgiveness. Meeting Jolanya and joining her for the Kailithara, a sacred healing journey, changes all that. In a hidden chamber, she begins to teach him the subtler arts of love-making.

An Excerpt with Kyr and Jolanya:

Her body, graceful and magnificent, was now clad only in the silken darkness of her knee-length hair. “You, too, Kyr.” Trying not show his eagerness, he shed all his clothing, too.

From one of the baskets against the wall, she pulled out a small drum. Tapping out a slow and sinuous rhythm, she moved in rhythm with her drumming. As she danced around the chamber, the curtain of her hair swayed, revealing and concealing her beauty.

This tantalizing vision claimed his eyes, his breath, and his manhood, and he willingly surrendered them. Fascinated and aroused by her proud, voluptuous movement, he turned on his knees to follow her dance with his eyes, bound to the sight of her. Behind her, the glittering mosaics of the Goddess and her Consort whirled, flashing with erotic power, deepening his desire.

“Dance with me, Kyr.”  

“What? No, no! I don’t know how.”

“It’s a little like the Flowing Poses, but with no set pattern. Just stand, close your eyes, and listen to the drum. Breathe and relax, breathe and relax. Let yourself sway with the beat.” 

“Gods,” he murmured. “Alright, I’ll try.” He stood and let his body rock side-to-side in time with the drum.

“Unlock your knees, shake yourself loose a little. Good. Now, let yourself move however you like. You can’t make a mistake because there is no wrong way to do this.” 

Tentatively at first, he began to move around the chamber. Then an unexpected joy of freedom, and the mesmerizing rhythm of the drum lifted him into a graceful dance. With eyes closed, he followed the beat as the Kailithana increased the tempo. Absorbed in this new pleasure, he kept moving even when the drum stopped.

Warm hands clasped his waist, and he opened his eyes to meet Jolanya’s kindling gaze. The Kailithana pulled him into her dance. He placed his hands on her shoulders to keep in rhythm with her as they swirled around the chamber.

Laughing, he abandoned himself to the delight of moving with a partner, enjoying the solid, vibrant aliveness of her muscles and bones moving under her sweat-slicked skin, breathing deeply of her musky, sweet scent, gazing into her glowing eyes. As he surrendered more into the dance, they moved faster and faster, the God and Goddess of the mosaics flashing past—kissing, touching, conjoined. He longed to clasp the Kailithana to him, caress her, enter her, but did not dare to take the lead.

Rahima Warren is the author of Dark Innocence: Book One of the Star-Seer's Prophecy, a deep, rich novel of the healing journey. The Best Kept Secret Outside of Jersey – Andy Devine’s Pine Barrens

Most people think of New Jersey as a superhighway known as the Turnpike surrounded by belching refineries and wastelands with New York on one end and Atlantic City on the other. But that’s a New Yorker’s view of what lies on the opposite end of the George Washington Bridge. In reality Andy Devine’s home state is so much more, though we Jerseyans like to perpetuate that myth to keep all undeserving out. Truth be told this beautiful state is home to one of the most unspoiled places on the East Coast, the Pine Barrens, an enormous and all-encompassing tract of open space that covers 1.1 million acres, or 22 percent of New Jersey's land area. Also known as the Pinelands, or to the natives simply “The Pines,” this special place is classified as a United States Biosphere Reserve and in 1978 was established by Congress as the country’s first National Reserve. It includes portions of seven southern New Jersey counties, and encompasses over one-million acres of farms, forests and wetlands. It contains 56 communities, from hamlets to suburbs, with over 700,000 permanent residents. It is the largest body of open space on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard between Richmond and Boston and is underlain by aquifers containing 17 trillion gallons of some of the purest water in the land.

Agriculture, including blueberries and cranberries, as well as row and field crops, is extremely important to the region's economy. New Jersey is among the top states in the nation in the production of blueberries and cranberries, and virtually all of these are grown in the Pinelands. In and about the Pines in the summer, especially around the communities of Medford, Pemberton and Chatsworth, you’ll see roadside farmstands aplenty such as Andy and Julie frequented, with especially succulent tomatoes, peaches and sweet corn.And in the fall the Pines many flooded cranberry bogs are awash in crimson during harvest time.

Low, dense forests of pine and oak, ribbons of cedar and hardwood swamps bordering drainage courses, pitch pine lowlands, and bogs and marshes combine to produce an expansive vegetative mosaic unsurpassed in the Northeast. The Pinelands also contains over 12,000 acres of "pygmy forest," a unique stand of dwarf, but mature, pine and oak less than 11 feet tall. Here can be found 850 species of plants, including rare plants such as the curly grass fern, and broom crowberry. Theregion contains unusual range overlaps where species of 109 southern plants and 14 northern plants reach their respective geographic limits. Development of the unique flora of the Pinelands is also closely related to the occurrence of fire, as some pinecones have evolved to only open and seed under intense heat. Thirty-nine species of mammals, 299 Bird, 59 reptile and amphibian species and 91 fish species have also been identified as occurring within the Pinelands. They include 43 animal species listed as threatened or endangered by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

So come on down and visit us, but bear in mind, as they say on “Piney Power” dot com: The Pine Barrens is becoming a popular tourist destination. It offers history, nature, boating, camping, fishing, swimming, and most of all, peace and tranquility. It's important to families who live here, whether for a few years or many generations, that our peace and tranquility be preserved. A local lawyer or doctor won't look any different than his neighbor who works the land. Thousand dollar suits aren't what impress people of the Pines - taking care of nature and fellow man is what matters. To that end, it is important for you to know that as a visitor to our precious Pine Barrens, you should show respect for the flora and fauna, for the historical buildings or their remains, and show respect for the "locals". Walk and drive gently. Treat our Pine Barrens as you would want a visitor to treat your own home town - and your own family. Thank you.

 Heroines as Characters

I don’t mind if a heroine begins a story confused, uncertain, or with
insecurities BUT she can’t end the story as the same person!!!

I think there has been a tendency in erotic romance (especially
BDSM-themed erotic romance) to keep the heroine weak and submissive in

order to make the hero remain strong. And I don’t see the need for it! A
strong, dominant man isn’t emasculated if the heroine of the story also
becomes a stronger woman! I think some of the BDSM erotica is a little
naive in assuming that the woman MUST always be submissive. A good
Master in real life encourages his sub to develop and grow as a person.
And that should be reflected in good BDSM erotica.

I like my female characters to have some spunk and some strength. I like
them to show their personality, and have them develop as people. I don’t
think it devalues the Master/submissive relationship - I think it makes
it more realistic! In all of my stories, I try to make the woman as
real as I possibly can, putting them in realistic situations, and

My real love for the genre stems from the opportunity to take my readers on a journey and engage as many of their emotions as possible.

I believe writing erotic romance gives authors the most influence over how a reader feels as we engage them in our stories.

Writers of action books, or horror books certainly can create compelling situations, but with erotic romance we writers can immerse our readers in a multitude of emotions unprecedented in any other form of creative fiction.

I can frustrate readers, make them laugh, make them cry, delight them, intrigue them, inform them - erotic fiction is a total emotional experience, and it is gratifying to hear readers respond to stories with passion.

I believe readers want to be engaged and drawn into the pages of a story, and as a writer of erotic romance, we have the greatest opportunity because our stories are always relatable. They may be fictional worlds and fictional characters, but the themes of love and romance and erotica are so universal, and so personal to each of us that we all respond to stories in different ways.

But we all respond.

And that’s the true joy of writing erotic romance. It matters not so much how you respond as you read... it matters only that you do respond. If a writer can engage you and make you feel, then the story’s journey is one well worth taking.
