Guest Post and Giveaway with Dannika Dark

United By Books is pleased to let Dannika Dark take over the blog to day .......

THE WRITING PROCESS

Two people get into a fight. Seems like an easy scene to write, doesn’t it? When I wrote “Sterling”, there was a critical fight scene at the end of the book. I did have several scenes before that which also involved training room sparring. That scene made me go back and re-evaluate how I wrote every action scene in my book. It’s not a movie, so I couldn’t rely on what I was seeing in my head. Somehow, I needed to get into the scene and ask myself some basic questions:

Is that physically possible to do?
Can she extend her leg in that manner and reach hisabdomen while in that position?

All of a sudden, I found myself in a situation where I either needed to re-enact the scenes, or go out on the streets and have a rumble with some thugs.

I decided not to go with the latter.

It also put me in an interesting situation (given I am a lover, not a fighter) and have no formal training in martial arts, kickboxing, nor have I ever been to Fight Club. I do have an insatiable love of action movies. A writer has to be very careful about every scene they write. Your fight scene may only be one paragraph, but if you have no experience, then you could write yourself into a hot mess. So, to get around this, I decided it was necessary for me to re-enact the fight scenes in my living room. On one occasion, I lost track of time, the sun went down, and my blinds were left open. I’m sure my neighbors got an eyeful.

This has become an important process in my writing. To make sure that every detail is properly researched and considered. I wish that I had a list of some of the topics that I’ve had to Google and spend hours reading up on. This might be an example of some of my search keywords:

What does the interior of an Aston Martin look like? What does the key look like?
What is the difference between energy and electricity?
Italian Wars
Apple harvest season (which was excluded from the book due to an improbability)
Medieval swords
What do people put in an omelet? (Oh, don’t judge me for this one)

You are responsible for making sure, to the best of your ability, that readers are not thrown out of a scene because you didn’t do your research. The last thing I wanted was for someone who knew about cars to look at a one sentence scene and say, “That is NOT what a key to an Aston Martin looks like!”

So it’s become very important for me to not make assumptions when it comes to writing about any small detail that I’m not familiar with. Could things be missed? Of course, but writing has taught me a valuable lesson in not relying solely on my imagination. That will only get you so far.

It’s also made me want to take some Judo lessons.

Interview and Giveaway With Lisa Renee Jones

United By Books is very pleased to have the lovely Lisa Renee Jones on our page today!

Award winning author, Lisa Renee Jones, has published more than fifteen novels in several different languages, spanning multiple genres of romance – contemporary, romantic suspense, dark paranormal and erotic fiction. In each book the hero is dark, dangerous, and sexy. She debuted for both, Nocturne and Blaze, on the Bookscan bestseller list.

Lisa has some wonderful series to check out and to name a few they are The Vampire Wardens, Zodius Series, The Masters, and The Underground Guardians.

Q1)~ For those who don't know you. Please tell us a little about yourself?

Lisa: First thanks so much for inviting me today! I live in Colorado with my fiancé and my cat and right after RWA in July we are getting married in Vegas at Paris Hotel and then flying to the real Paris!:) I owned a large staffing agency for 11 years so writing was a second career. My fiancé was a  Physical Therapist for many years and now he’s about to start med school which is why we came to Colorado.

Q2)~ When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer?

Lisa: I always loved books and I did a lot of acting as a teen and then even as an adult. I got back into the film industry in Austin and did independent films. To really do anything with acting I had to go to LA or NY so I looked for another creative outlet. I started by writing a script and that morphed into a book.

Q3)~ Do you have any interesting writing quirks or something you must have with you to start your writing process?

Lisa: My cat and my coffee lol! And I’m serious. My cat is my writing partner and my morning coffee just feels like the thing that gets me started.

Q4)~ What do you enjoy doing in your down time?

Lisa: Movies and television. I am a television fanatic. We have so many shows we love. We like to get them on Netflix and watch entire seasons over a weekend. A little piece of heaven!

Q5) ~  If you have a TBR pile can you please share what books your looking forward to getting to and who your favorite authors are in that stack?

Lisa: I gobbled up Karen Monings Fever Series and the Mercy series by Patricia Briggs. I adore Galean Foley. I don’t write historical and she does it so beautifully. I just get to escape.  I love my pal Donna Grants books too.  I always have a copy of Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard on my shelf and a lot of her older books.

Q6)~ What is your favorite part of writing?

Lisa: The end is the best and worst. I hate letting go of the characters but I really love knowing the story is complete. The characters often haunt me for days after I finish.

Q7)~ Please share some juicy details about the book or series you are featuring today.

Lisa: Well the series has a lot of hot military guys and you will meet the hero for book three in quite a lot of detail in book two. One of the fun things about the series is that it’s set in Nevada, and book two has a lot of Vegas, which comes from my love of Vegas. I’ve been many times.

Q8)~  Was there a character you enjoyed writing the most?

Lisa: I did like Sterling quite a lot. He’s a Mel Gibson Lethal Weapon kind of guy. He’s damaged but he’s never lost his giving soul. He’s a good guy to the core and nothing he’s experience, no matter how horrific, has touched that when it would have most people.

Q9)~ What can readers expect next from you?

Lisa : Troy’s story -- Hot Vampire Touch – is the completion of my Vampire Wardens trilogy and that is out in November. In that book you will meet the hero for Wicked Werewolf Night out December 13th.

Q10)~ Do you have certain scenes you love writing more than others?

Lisa: No. I like them all. I like experiencing the growth of the book and the characters inside the cover. The sex scenes are the most draining. They have come from the characters and they need to be emotional, not just physical. They take me the longest.

Q11)~ Is there anything else you would like to say or share with the readers stopping by the post today Lisa?

Lisa: Thank you again for having me. And I have a signed copy of my Blaze Texas Hotzone trilogy to give away.

To enter just comment here – for one entry.

Go LIKE The Storm that is Sterling on Amazon for a second entry!
